WEST 2002: Workshop on Election Standards and Technology
January 31 - February 1, 2002
American Association for the Advancement of Science
1200 New York Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20005
WEST 2002 is a small research-oriented workshop devoted to examining election
standards and technology. The workshop is being organized by the Caltech-MIT
Voting Technology Project and Dr. David Chaum and
is funded in part by the National Science Foundation. The American Association for the Advancement of Science is
hosting the workshop.
Registration is required.
After all the studies have been conducted and all the reports are in, any
major changes in voting systems in the U.S. now depend on the standards process
chosen that will guide future voting-system development. House and Senate bills
that are making legislative progress on the Hill differ markedly in their
approaches to standards. WEST 2002 endeavors to bring together all interested
and relevant groups for the first major event on this key and timely issue. The workshop aims to provide a forum for addressing questions such as:
- What is the current voting-systems standards process?
- How did we arrive at the current process?
- What are the experiences of stakeholders with the current process?
- How can standards best address the integrity/secrecy/robustness of
elections?
- How can standards best address human factors that affect how election
systems are used?
- How can standards best address the efficacy and accuracy of elections?
- What are the new voting and related standards initiatives underway?
- What are the best applicable practices in the standards world generally?
- What should the approach be to our voting-system standards process?
We expect to offer a complimentary luncheon and cocktail reception on Thursday,
though our grant only permits limited travel and accommodation expenses for
speakers.
WEST 2002 is sponsored by the Caltech-MIT/Voting Technology Project through a grant from the National Science Foundation and hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. |
